Bridgette Bee 4 U, Nurture yourself
Mood:  energetic
Topic: Sistah Vegan Book Ideas?
I am a 42 year old vegan raw foodist and I personal trainer I would like to attach my bio and help any way that I can help our sistahs understand we have to take care of ourselves before we take care of everyone else.

Bridgette Massey Peterson

Bridgette began her life long endeavor towards a career in fitness early in life where she attended a performing arts high school where she participated in the dance program. While attending Rutgers College in New Jersey, majoring in Biology Pre-Medicine she began training and running in 10K races. She started teaching aerobics classes in a Health Club. Upon moving to the Washington DC metropolitan area she continued to teach aerobics in a Health Club and in a corporate setting. Bridgette started lifting weights with the goal of participating in bodybuilding competitions. In April 2003 Bridgette received her initial certification as a personal trainer with NCCPT (National Council for Certified Personal Trainers) through LAFitness. In November 2004 Bridgette completed her first marathon in 4 hours and 18 minutes. Bridgette has been a vegetarian for over 25 years and within the last ten years she has adopted the vegan lifestyle. Bridgette has coached little league soccer (8-9 year olds) for two seasons. In February 2006 Bridgette became recertified as a personal trainer with ISSA. Bridgette would like to continue her very fit life with the hopes of opening up her own gym the will incorporate fitness and nutrition together.

Hey, Bridgette,

I like your idea that we have to take care of ourselves first before we can take care of others. Too much emphasis has been placed on a woman's nurturing role and not the role of person, apart from her relationships and how she maintains them.

Hi Judi and Bridgette,

I agree that we do have to remember to take care of ourself. I just realized how significant this is in my own life. For 10 years I've been pushing through with my social justice activism, attacking all those "-isms." I've spent so long nurturing the hearts and minds of so many people that I have forgotten to take care of my own spirit and emotional health. A new resolution for me this year is to understand that veganism is not simply about the "food I put into my physical system." I mush expand the practice to EVERYTHING I consume. I need to be careful not to consume too much "stressful negative" energy when dealing with many ignorant angry people that continue to perpetuate racism, classism, hetersexism, speciesism. I must learn how to take care of my own physical and spiritual harmony and not "take on more than I can chew." Perhaps some of the ladies contributing to the book can reflect on this on their stories or poems or what not. I'd love to hear that.

Best,
Breeze Harper

Oh yes, women are always taught that they are to nurture others before they nurture their own selves. Well to that I say **** it. Seriously, a woman is a human being just like everyone else and why should she have to feel bad or whatnot just because she wants to take care of herself first before others? People always want to label you anyway if you are different in any sort of way away from the "norm" so to speak. Label me, I don't care. lol. I agree with you all completely. Those are my comments for now.

I just picked up a magazine produced by PETA called The Vegetarian Starter Kit.  I found it in one of those free magazine kiosks in Manhattan.  I read it, watched the videos on the PETA website and am seriously considering changing my eating habits (cutting out chicken, beef, turkey, etc. already don't eat pork).  May eat fish and drink milk for a bit.  Can someone tell me the difference between a vegetarian and a vegan?  What do people mean when they say they are vegetarian but considering adopting a vegan lifestyle?  People talk about the benefits of salmon all the time, is it healthy to totally cease eating fish?  Thanks so much!

vegan love from your brother...

i just wanted to give a big shout out to you sister bridgette, - and no
doubt, sister a.b. harper & this whole blog community - for your example and
consistent determination. acknowledging and then creating
a space to share and articulate the "vegan" lifestyle from the perspective
of folks (sistahs) of the african diasporia is indeed a commendable
initiative.

i, too, am a vegan and often find myself the only black person at duathlon
competitions; so i love to hear other soulful vegans doing "the thing" (i'm
also a pre-med major which makes your story that much more stirring).  i
started a blog for the very purpose of staying motivated and sharing my
experiences, mainly because it was already rare finding black vegans and,
then another thing all together, connecting with black vegans who were also
out competing in sports that aren't commonly engaged by black folks (i.e.
cycling, etc.)

thank you again for posting, you are truly an encouragement for me, i'm sure
for others on this site and also to those who may not necessarily embrace
the vegan diet (yet, LOL). i would love to stay up to date with your
athletic (and I guess academic) pursuits & progress.
i'm encouraging vegan sisters i know to the participate in the project. furthermore, i'm anticipating huge success in achieving the goal of the project.
peace and love,
mangwiro
